The carpal tunnel is located in the wrist and houses ligaments and a nerve called the median nerve. The increased pressure that squeezes the nerve can cause symptoms such as numbness and tingling in the hands and fingers. It may also lead to decreased sensation in the fingers. Symptoms are especially aggravating at night. Carpal tunnel syndrome often occurs during the third trimester and affects pregnant women to a greater extent as they commonly have a build-up of fluids that increase the pressure on the median nerve. The pain usually eases off after childbirth.
An occupational therapist can help fit out a splint for the wrist to help ease the pain. The splint keeps the wrist properly aligned and relieves it from unnecessary strain. It may also help to rest regularly if you are actively using your hands.
